Winnipeg allies, cottage owners and Indigenous community members will come together to Take a Stand with Camp Morning Star at the Manitoba legislature, Wednesday, May 29 11am – 1pm.Drums and drum groups will join with the Camp Drum for the land & water.
Hollow Water community members have been keeping a sacred fire for over 100 days now to pray for the lands and waters that are under threat from Canadian Premium Sand (CPS), who have just received a license from the Pallister government to build a silica mine and processing plant that is right on their traditional territory and a community trap line.
Supporters and Camp Morning Star are here to tellthe Province of Manitoba that we are are not going away.
A camp statement says;
“This recent issuance of a provincial license to Canadian Premium Sand to mine for fracking sand on Hollow Water & treaty 5 territory has empowered us to step up, we tried playing by the rules, following policies and their guidelines and now we have to fight to protect our land and way of life. We are calling on all treaty 5 nations and supporters to step up & join us. Stand up against oppression from Indian act chiefs, this province and resource extraction industries taking advantage of communities and a negligent federal government.”
An appeal to the license will be launched. A coalition, including Camp Morning Star and supporters, “What the Frack Manitoba” called on the federal government to step up and do a joint federal/ provincial review as the environmental impacts are significant. That request has now been denied. The province says our concerns have been addressed. We are here to tell them they have not. Fracking is a toxic, destructive industry and a backward environmental step. This is not an industry Manitoba should be supporting.
Speakers include: members of Camp Morning Star, including youth representatives, Rob Altemeyer NDP Environment Critic, Nikki Ashton NDP MP, Susanne McCrea Boreal Action & founding member of What the Frack Manitoba (NGO), Eric Reder /Western Canada Wilderness Committee & several others, including east side cottage owners.
